About the Artist
Steve Hanks achieves amazing detail and realism in his watercolor paintings that is usually only seen in oil or acrylic. His beautiful paintings convey an appreciation of form but also communicate emotion and thoughtfulness.
Steve has won many awards for his art including the National Watercolor Society Merit Award, the Gold Medal from the National Academy of Western Art, among others, and was a recent invited participant in the Prix de West show at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in 2012.
Steve was born in 1949 in California, and his artistic talent was recognized at an early age. He sold his first painting in high school, and then studied art through college. Steve enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and then studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts.
After 15 years as an oil painter, Steve developed allergies to oil paints in the 1980's and out of necessity developed his skill in watercolor, and mastered the art of painting in the medium.
Susan Hallsten McGarry, former editor of Southwest Art, wrote about Steve: "Hanks is, first and foremost, a figure painter, following the line with such masters of the human form as Raphael, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Ingres. Through the effects of light on the figure, Hanks molds visions that convince us of the singular beauty of the human form as a meritorious subject in its own right."
