About the Artist
Wesley Drake is a traditional representational painter passionate about exploring different places and cultures and translating those experiences onto canvas. He will often be found painting en plein air, French for "in the open air", where he can observe the interaction of light and color on the subject, and have the emotional connection that painting from life creates. These paintings done outdoors quite often find themselves being used as reference for larger paintings in the studio.
Wesley has exhibited at the Western Masters show
presented by C.M. Russell Museum, the National Juried Exhibition for Oil Painters of America, and the Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art.
Wesley was born in Buffalo, New York in 1970 and, from a young age, moved frequently to different cities due to his father's work. Wesley has travelled extensively and visited many countries. "Travel opens the door to discovering different cultures, architecture, culinary experiences and ways of life that I can't help but want to translate onto canvas," Wes says.
While acquiring his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with honors, Wes Drake solidified his artistic foundations and discipline in traditional painting methods. Upon moving to Chicago, he discovered the 100-year old Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Art to be a great place to continue honing his skills with the community of artists found there.
Currently Wesley and his family live in Chicago, Illinois.
